English madrigals at St Augustine’s

MADRIGALIA, THE National Chamber Choir of Ireland’s show celebration of the madrigal style of singing and composing, is coming to Galway.

Madrigalia takes place on Friday July 22 at 8pm in the Augustinian Church and is part of the 2011 Galway Arts Festival.

Conducted by Paul Hillier, the NCCI will perform early 17th century works by English composers John Wilbye and Thomas Tomkins; 20th century explorations by Michael Tippett and Thea Musgrave; and lesser known 19th century revival of early music with Shakespeare settings by George MacFarren.

There will also be three madrigalian partsongs by Pearsall, a glee by William Beale, and a double-choir setting of John Milton’s 1645 work ‘On Time’.

Tickets are available from the festival box office on Forster Street and through www.galwayartsfestival.com and www.ticketmaster.ie
