A sight-seeing trip turned into tragedy for two tourists after their motorcycle was in collision with a car on sharp country road bend.
Gardai are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash which claimed the lives of two French tourists on Tuesday. A 77-year-old man and his pillion passenger, a 66-year-old woman, were killed when the motorcycle they were travelling on collided with a car on the N67 between Kinvara and Ballyvaughan at Roo Demesne.
The collision occurred just before 5pm and the couple were pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor. At time of going to press, gardai had not released the names of the couple as attempts are still being made to contact family members in France.
The four people travelling in the car, two adults and two children, were described as uninjured but “shaken”. Two units of the fire brigade from Gort and an ambulance from Galway attended the scene, and the road was closed off for some time while gardai conducted a forensic examination of the scene.
Despite there being a number of accidents along the N67 route over the years, it is understood that the area where this particular accident occurred is not a known blackspot.
A spokesperson for Galway Garda Station described how the motorbike carrying the French tourists “rounded a bend, colliding with the car at the corner”. He added that the motorcycle was “just not able to take the corner”.
