THE GUARD, the major new Irish crime-comedy film, starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, will receive its premiere screening as part of the Galway Film Fleadh on Wednesday July 6 at 7pm in The Eye cinema.
The Guard is set in the west of Ireland (much of it was shot in Galway ) where Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Gleeson ) is a small-town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett (Cheadle ) to his door.
The film was written and directed by John Michael McDonagh and stars Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, Harry Potter, The General ), Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2, Crash, Hotel Rwanda ), as well as Liam Cunningham, Pat Shortt, Darren Healy, Fionnula Flanagan, and Slovenian actress Katarina Cas.
The Guard has already enjoyed very positive reviews. Screen Daily said: “The Guard will win over audiences with its zinger lines from McDonagh’s script and deft casting in all the roles”. The Hollywood Reporter described it as “verbally adroit and very often hilarious, this twisted and exceptionally accomplished variation on the buddy-cop format is capped by a protean performance by Brendan Gleeson”. The Guardian declared that “The Guard has some of the best one-liners and drop-dead observations I've heard for a while.”
The premiere in The Eye will be attended by Brendan Gleeson, Pat Shortt, Liam Cunningham, and director John Michael McDonagh.
The Guard will be released Nationwide from July 7. See www.theguard.ie
