Galway People’s Resource Centre to launch new premises

The Galway People’s Resource Centre, which relocated from Nuns Island to a new premises in St Clare’s Walk earlier this year, will officially open its new offices on Monday.

Dep Derek Nolan will officially launch the new premises at 12.30pm on Monday.

The centre has provided a range of services for jobseekers and others since it first opened in 1986. It is an information and training centre that, as a member of the Congress Centres Network, seeks to promote the values of solidarity, fairness, and equality through training, education, advocacy, and other services in the community.

The centre was based in Nuns Island for more than 20 years before moving to its current location in February. The centre’s new offices and multipurpose training suite/conference room are located in the Hynes Building, St Clare’s Walk, between Merchants Road and St Augustine Street.

“Our new premises, immediately adjacent to the library and a stone’s throw from the Department of Social Protection, is ideally situated to allow us serve anyone who may need to query their entitlements or anyone who may need help with an appeal if they feel that they were treated unfairly,” said Margaret Cullinane, the centre’s co-ordinator. “We provide a comprehensive information and advocacy service through our welfare and equality offices as well as training and training/education information through our education office.”

The centre is also a fully accredited FETAC and FÁS registered training centre, providing a variety of quality assured FETAC accredited courses throughout the year with an emphasis on practical job-centred skills and personal development. The training suite/conference room is available to rent to community groups or private companies at reasonable rates.

Other services also provided within the centre include a jobs club, OBAIR Local Employment Service, and Changing Minds, a friendly and confidential counselling service for those on a low income.
