Stylish new Citroen C4 has real substance

The new Citroen C4, which was launched earlier this year, is keenly priced with the entry level model at €19,140.

The new model has C4’s distinctive profile and offers the balanced proportions of its successful rally heritage. It gives a clear impression of strength and stability, right from the purposeful front end to the rear spoiler. Chrome detailing combines with dynamic headlight styling and sculpted alloy wheels for a sophisticated and impressive road presence.

Fractionally larger than the previous model, the new C4’s compact external dimensions - 4.33m (l ), 1.79m (w ), 1.49m (h ) - conceal generous internal volumes with spacious accommodation for all occupants; built-in versatility and practicality; and a class-leading boot volume of up to 408-litres.

Selected models feature a new raised centre console - another first for the class - which houses a cooled and illuminated storage area that can take four 0.5-litre bottles. Other available equipment includes a connecting box that provides Bluetooth® and a USB socket; front and rear parking sensors; parking space ‘gap’ measurement; Xenon dual-function directional headlamps; and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

With CO2 emissions from just 109g/km, the new C4 is one of the most ecologically-conscious models in the segment. Powered by an extensive range of refined and efficient powerplants - BMW co-developed petrol engines and efficient HDi diesel units. Power output ranges from a refined 90bhp to a punchy 110bhp. Five and six-speed manual and six-speed electronic gearbox system transmissions are all available.

Thanks to the car’s low emissions, the diesel engines start from Band A of the Vehicle Road Tax at €104. All models are fuel and CO2 efficient – with up to 67.3mpg economy and emissions as low as 109g/km on e-HDi versions, making the new C4 one of the most ecologically conscious models in the segment.

Citroen’s innovative micro-hybrid e-HDi drivetrain is available with the HDi 110 engine and EGS transmission, which delivers CO2 emissions as low as 109g/km - reducing to 99g/km on future models. A combination of several technologies - including a second generation stop and start system with regenerative braking - e-HDi helps to improve fuel efficiency by up to 15 per cent in city driving conditions, with CO2 emissions reduced by around 5g/km.

One of the safest vehicles in its class, the new C4 has been awarded the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating, including a 97 per cent score in the ‘Safety Assist’ category - the highest score for any vehicle of its type.

The new Citroen C4 is offered in three well-specified trims - VTR, VTR+ and Exclusive - and is attractively priced, starting with the aforementioned entry level model at €19,140, and rising to €25,890 for the range-topping 1.6e-HDi 110hp EGS Exclusive.

My recent test in the new Citroen C4 reconfirmed for me its perfect balance and really pleasurable driving. It is the best example of tight new generation Citroen models and it has a real substance to match its inspiring styling and distinctive good looks.

On top of that, a high quality finish, good ride comfort, five star safety ratings, and good fuel economy return, means the new C4 is well placed to meet the requirements of the most demanding mid-size five-door hatchback customers.
