Norman Whiteside, a member of the great Northern Ireland team that beat Spain at the 1982 World Cup and progressed to the knock-out stages, is coming to Galway.
Whiteside will be taking part in Newstalk 106–108 fm’s Off The Ball show which will be broadcasting from the Salthill-Knocknacarra GAA clubhouse next Monday. The Galway event is part of Off The Ball’s summer roadshows sponsored by GAA Championship sponsors Ulster Bank.
At 17 years and 41 days, Norman Whiteside became the youngest player ever to play in the World Cup - beating Pelé’s record of 17 years and 239 days set in 1958 - during España ‘82. That team, which also featured Pat Jennings, Martin O’Neill, and Gerry Armstrong - beat Spain 1-0 in one of the major upsets of the tournament. The team progressed to the second stage, missing out on a place in the semi-finals after a defeat to France and a draw with Austria.
Whiteside also enjoyed success with Manchester United, scoring a legendary goal from a long range kick against Everton at the 1985 FA Cup final, earning his team the trophy.
