Medal haul for Galway swimmers

Saoirse McGrath headlined a successful meet for Galway swimmers at the Leinster age-group and open championships in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin at the weekend.

McGrath swept the u-16 category, winning titles in the 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley, while also setting a new u-17 Connacht record in the 100 breaststroke.

Fourteen swimmers represented the Galway Swimming Club with the team claiming 21 titles, and 13 silver and seven bronze medals.

Also in the u-16 category, Cian Duffy won four Leinster titles in the 200 individual medley, 200 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley.

In the open category, Jack Keogh won four titles in the 200 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Open category teammate Kevin McGlade won the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley, while in the female open category, Dairne Ryan won the 100 freestyle.

In the u-15 category, Ciara Naughton won the 100 backstroke, while David O’Sullivan picked up two third places in the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

Fiona Staunton won three u-14 titles in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley, Ruth Keogh won two titles in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, while Keena Walsh won the 100 freestyle. Other podium places in the u-14 categories were achieved by Katie McKnight and Oisin Duffy.
