Colga FC begun the defence of its WFAI Umbro U16 Cup with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Kilmore Ladies.
Colga’s two influential Irish internationals Keara Cormician and Lisa Casserly helped their side take a foothold in midfield, and a switch of play from Rachael Bannon sent Brennan through and she finished to the back of the net on 25 minutes.
Kilmore hit back when Kilmore’s pivotal Tamara O’Connor converted a free to draw level at the break.
The gale became more pronounced in Colga’s favour in the second half which put Belmullet on the back foot. Ruth Horkan and Eimear Feeney’s dominance of the wings ensured Colga were well in control. On 56 minutes they stretched the lead when Casserly left the defenders trailing in her wake and tucked the ball away to the corner of the net. Breaks from Christina Reilly and Doherty found no reward for Kilmore as they continued to show their resolve.
On 65 minutes forward pressure resulted in a goal for Moran who was switched from full back to centre forward in the second half. Moran added another within five minutes to seal the victory for the Galway girls.
