City council to provide grants for local festivals

Galway City Council has just announced its sixth annual local community festivals grant awards scheme. Local organisations who are planning events in the city in the coming months may be eligible for a grant under this scheme.

In previous years, small, local festivals around the city have received support to involve and engage local people to contribute to a sense of community in old and new estates and areas.

In 2010, events and festivals in An Sean Bháile, Ballybane, Castlepark, Mervue, and Tirellan received funding. A total fund of €10,000 is available again this year and interested local groups are invited to apply.

Grants will not be awarded for occasional or once-off events such as musical performances, national day celebrations, or sports days as the scheme is quite specifically designed to support small-scale local events organised by local people for local people in 2011.

The application form is available from Galway City Council and on the web at www.galwaycitycouncil.ie and has been designed to be as simple as possible. It includes the criteria that will be used for assessing eligibility. Completed application forms should be returned by Friday May 27 to the Community and Enterprise Department of Galway City Council. The decisions on grant aid will be made next month.
