Coláiste Cholumba, an Irish summer college located in the Connemara Gaeltacht, has come up with this fantastic offer in these difficult economic times. For only half the price of the typical summer course (normally almost €900 ) you can experience all the spraoí, spóirt, craic agus ceol while learning Irish, which has made Coláiste Cholumba a huge success for more than 40 years.
These courses are inclusive of accommodation, food, tuition, sports activities and travel during the course. Also included are the famous theme nights and discos, and with barbecues and beach parties, it’s hard to imagine a more fun-filled experience in one of the most popular Irish summer colleges.
Coláiste Cholumba is located in An Cheathrú Rua in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht and provides a base for students to further their appreciation and knowledge of not only the Irish language but also of Ireland’s rich historical culture.
Courses are graded and cater for primary students, pre-Junior Cert and pre-Leaving Cert, with special tuition on oral examinations.
Course dates are as follows 10-day course B: 29/06/11 to 09/07/11 and C: 22/07/11 to 01/08/11. Three-week courses B: 29/06/11 to 21/07/11 and C: 22/07/11 to 13/08/11.
Coláiste Cholumba uses the communicative approach in Irish classes and avails of modern teaching aids as well as drama and other techniques to ensure that each student has the greatest opportunity to improve his or her Irish.
Students start the day with bricfeasta at 9am followed by classes from 10am to 12.50pm. After lunch students play sports and other activities until 4.30pm. Afternoon activities include basketball, volleyball, netball, uni-hoc, soccer (on a state of the art astroturf pitch ), rugby, mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, rafting, and orienteering as well an extremely popular obstacle course.
Dinner is at five and from 7.30pm to 9.15pm students take part in céilithe, discos, singing competitions, concerts, sketches, debates, dramas, and talent shows.
Coláiste Cholumba is also famed for its theme nights which include dubh agus bán, céilí, 60s, céilí gléasta, oíche Hawaii, oíche Hollywood, oíche pop stars, oíche culchie, oíche na gcontaetha, céilí tire, and many more.
Coláiste Cholumba also runs special courses for those sitting the Leaving Cert 2012, Junior Cert, and for sixth class primary and first year post primary students.
