Two men were charged this week in connection with a pipe bomb incident which led to the evacuation of Galway Garda Station more than two years ago.
The Galway District Court heard on Monday how Alan Rossborough (24 ), formerly of 124 Castlepark, Ballybane, but more recently of 88 Glen Dara, Rahoon, had been arrested on the morning before the court sitting and charged with having under his control, within the State on February 27, 2009, a firearm, a Remington Speedmaster .22 rifle in such circumstances as to give rise to a reasonable inference that it was not for a lawful purpose, contrary to Section 27a(1 ) of the Firearms Act 1964. The court heard that after charge and caution Rossborough had nothing to say in reply.
The co-accused, Michael O’Loughlin (31 ) with an address given as 10 Cardinal Cushing Road, Mervue, had also been charged on the morning of the court with having under his control, within the State on February 27, 2009, a firearm, a Remington Speedmaster .22 rifle in such circumstances as to give rise to a reasonable inference that it was not for a lawful purpose, contrary to Section 27a (1 ) of the Firearms Act 1964. He faces a further charge of knowingly having in his control on the same date a pipe bomb under such circumstances as to give rise to the inference that it was not for a lawful purpose, contrary to Section 4 of the Explosive Substance Act 1883 as amended by Section 15(a ) of the Offences Against the State Act 1998.
Inspector Sean Glynn said that in relation to both men the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to trial by indictment and that a book of evidence will be prepared.
Following an application made by Inspector Glynn to have Rossborough further remanded into custody, Garda Gerry Carroll proceeded to outline strong objections to bail being granted. In the case of O’Loughlin no bail application was made and he was remanded in custody by consent to appear at Harristown District Court tomorrow.
