This week I am going to talk about composting of garden and kitchen waste. Now people are starting to think about composting their waste in the garden as the leaves are starting to fall off the trees.
The best way to approach composting is to vary the items that you put into the compost bin.
Use all uncooked vegetables from the kitchen, egg boxes, some old newspapers, weeds and leaves from the garden. Put all of these items into your compost bin, mixing them as you put them in. It also a good idea to add some soil every now and then as this will introduce some bacteria and organisms that will speed up the process. You can also buy an organic accelerant from the garden centre that will also speed up the process.
The one secret to successful composting is that the contents of the bin have to be mixed every week or two from the bottom to the top. Clarenbridge Garden Centre has managed to source an auger for this that looks like a giant screw. It is an easy to use tool that will bring the material from the bottom of the bin to the top and vice versa. By doing this you are speeding up the composting process enormously.
