Connolly seeks meeting over road closure

A meeting between the Galway City Council and Dominick Street businesses is vital to allay concerns over road closures during work to connect the area to the city’s main sewage discharge pipes.

This is the view of Independent councillor Catherine Connolly who has written to the engineer in charge of the project, requesting a meeting with local businesses to see if “any compromise can be reached”.

The Galway City Council will soon begin works to connect businesses and residences in lower Dominick Street, Nuns Island, Long Walk Earl’s Island, Enterprise Park, and Ballyloughane to the city’s main sewage discharge pipes, which will bring waste out to Mutton Island to be treated.

Currently the pipes in the area discharge raw sewage into the canal, waterways, and ultimately Galway Bay.

However for these works to take place the Dominick Street area will have to be closed off to vehicular traffic for a number of weeks and this will cause disruptions and delays.

Independent councillor Catherine Connolly has welcomed the fact that the works are to begin.

“It will be wonderful news for the people of the Claddagh and Galway generally that the Claddagh Basin will be finally clear of raw sewage and the basin can be enjoyed for the wonderful facility it is in the middle of the city,” she said.

However she said “every effort” must be made to “facilitate businesses in the area who will be affected by the proposed road closure”.

She said businesses in the area are concerned and she said it is “vitally important that they make their concerns known in writing to the city council
