On yer bike - Galway to hold ‘Bike Festival’ in June

The Galway Bike Festival will take place from Saturday June 18 to Sunday 26 but from next week on a variety of organisations will be encouraging Galwegians to cycle to school, work, or college at least once a week.

The Galway City Council, Galway County Council, and An Taisce Green Schools have joined forces to encourage people across the county to get on their bikes every Wednesday, starting May 11, leading to the start of Galway Bike Festival on June 18.

“The cycle on May 11 is designed to encourage everyone, particularly those who may not have cycled in years, to give it a go,” said Joe Tansey, head of Galway Transportation Unit. “We are collaborating with a broad range of local stakeholders to encourage an increase in cycling in Galway.”

Mr Tansey said the Cycle on Wednesday days are well known among teachers and schoolchildren but they are now being “extended to encourage everyone to get on their bikes, perhaps cycling en route with schoolgoing children”.

The full programme for the Galway Bike Festival, which includes more than 30 events and initiatives, can be viewed or downloaded from www.galwaycity.ie People can follow the festival on Facebook and Twitter.
