Galway For Life warns NUIG not to follow UCC decision

Galway For Life has condemned the decision of the UCC Governing Body to allow human embryonic research to take place on its campus, and has warned NUI, Galway not to follow suit.

Eilís Grealy, spokesperson for Galway For Life, accused UCC of “a gross misrepresentation” in claiming it has found an ethical solution by only allowing research to take place on human embryos that are destroyed elsewhere.

Ms Grealy said that recent scientific breakthroughs in the “ethically non-controversial field” of adult stem cell research have meant that in many cases, embryonic stem cell research has been abandoned in favour of adult stem cell research.

“Adult stem cell research can be carried out without destroying human life,” she said. “Amazing scientific advances have occurred using adult stem cells that offer great hope to those who suffer from serious diseases.”

Ms Grealy said Galway For Life is urging NUI, Galway to “distance itself from any proposals that would interfere with the fundamental right to life of any human being”.
