An English double in Galway

Olivier Pett and Lauren Briggs pulled of a surprise English double in the Paddy 'Whack' Walsh West of Ireland Squash Open at Galway Lawn Tennis Club in Galway.

Unseeded Pett made his breakthrough in the semi-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 5 men's event when he took out top-seeded Dane Kristian Frost Olesen, fighting back from 2/1 down to win 11-9, 8-11, 2-11, 11-5, 11-3.

Celebrating the second tour final of his career, the 22-years-old from Sussex faced Wael Farag, the third seed from Egypt, who upset Germany's No 2 seed Jens Schoor, also in five games, in the other semi.

Farag, the world No 102 from Cairo, took the opening game, but Pett, ranked eight places lower, powered back to score a resounding 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 15-13 victory, and his second PSA Tour title.

The final of the women's WISPA World Tour 4 event also featured an unexpected line-up. Briggs, the sixth seed from London, overcame both the third and eighth seeds to reach the final where she faced Celia Allamargot, the fifth seed from France.

Briggs, now ranked higher than her opponent, romped through to the eighth tour title of her career with relative ease, dismissing Allamargot 11-5, 11-3, 11-6.

It was only her fourth tour appearance since December, but the 31-year-old’s third title in that period.
