A Garda investigation has been launched following an alleged shooting incident in a housing estate in Athenry on Tuesday night.
A man was left recovering in hospital with bullet wounds to the leg following the incident which occurred at a house in Fernhill, Athenry, between 9pm and 9.30pm on April 26 last.
It is understood that gardai responded to a call about a disturbance in the area and upon arrival discovered that extensive damage had been caused to the property.
Some time later a 31-year-old Lithuanian man presented himself at the Galway Clinic in Doughiska with injuries to his legs which according to a Garda statement “are believed to be bullet wounds”. The man was later transferred to University College Hospital Galway where he was still being treated yesterday, however, his condition is described as not life threatening.
The property was cordoned off while gardai carried out an examination of the scene yesterday. Further information regarding the incident was not available at time of going to press, however photographs taken at the scene show that considerable damage had been caused to the windows of a downstairs room and the front door as well as to a vehicle parked in the driveway.
An investigation was launched immediately following the incident and at time of going to press no arrests had been made.
Gardai are currently trying to establish the whereabouts of the occupants of the house who are described as Lithuanian nationals and are also appealing for witnesses to contact the incident room at Galway Gardai Station on 091-538000
