Console launches annual memorial walk

Hundreds will take to the streets on Sunday May 15 for Console’s Suicide Prevention and Postvention Memorial Walk. The walk is in aid of the Suicide Bereaved and Suicide Prevention Service and will be started by Michael D Higgins. Console is calling on families, friends, school friends and work colleagues to take to the streets and support a worthy cause.

The charity is hoping people from every county in Ireland will take the opportunity to help raise funds for families whose lives have been torn apart by suicide and those in suicidal crisis. The annual walk is entitled ‘Walking in Memory of Our Loved Ones’ and starts at 2pm from Claddagh Hall. The route leads to Blackrock and back to Claddagh Hall, where weary walkers can enjoy refreshments.

Margaret Tierney of Console says fundraising events such as the walk are at the request of friends who have lost a loved one to suicide. This event is crucial to maintain suicide bereavement services in Galway, Limerick, Wexford, Cork, Athlone and Dublin.

Ms Tierney said she was “overwhelmed at the tremendous response from the Galway and County Galway community to every single Console fundraiser”. “We are very aware that everyone has to tighten their belts and are being asked for money from every angle, so we really appreciate any support, even if supporters only raise a very small amount. Seeing the devastation of families whose lives will never be the same again inspires us to keep going and provide the support that we can. It all adds up, so we really do literally value every euro that sponsorship can raise. All monies raised from the walk will go towards offering counselling and support to families and children bereaved through suicide and those in suicidal crisis in our Renmore facility in Galway.”

Console offers a 24 hour free phone national helpline:(1800 201 890 ) for those bereaved through suicide and a 24 hour free phone national suicide prevention helpline (1800 247 100 ) for those in suicidal crisis.
