People living between Moycullen, Barna, and Rahoon can look forward to a better and more regular water supply from the major new reservoir to be built at Tonabrocky.
This is the view of Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh who was commenting on the announcement this week by the Environment Minister Phil Hogan that €2 million in funding was being made available to the Galway County Council to build the new reservoir.
Dep Walsh said the existing reservoir at Tonabrocky is “outdated”, resulting in significant leakage of large amounts of water. This in turn affects water pressure and supply to Ballymoneen, Cappagh Road, Letteragh, Barna, Moycullen, Clybaun, Rahoon, Kingston, and Ballyburke.
“Water is very expensive to produce and we could be losing 50 per cent of our supply in the city through leaks, but a lot of that will be addressed through the new reservoir,” Dep Walsh told the Galway Advertiser.
The contract for the work is included in the Department of Environment’s water services investment programme 2010-2012. It will go to tender straight away and will be concluded as soon as possible without it having to go back to the Department of the Environment for final approval.
“I welcome this investment in Galway,” said Dep Walsh. “It’s a significant enhancement of our water services. Over the years there have been complaints of water shortages in that area. This investment will address that and the ‘big win’ for people in the area is going to be improved water services into households.”
