THE GREAT saxophonist Stan Getz said the saxophone is “an instrument that sings” because “at its best it’s like the human voice.”
Indeed Galway will be singing with this instument thanks to The Chatham Saxophone Quartet, who have been announced by The Galway Music Residency as the new apprentice ensemble to the ConTempo Quartet.
From mid-April Chatham will avail of one to one tutoring with ConTempo and play a number of shows in Galway throughout the year.
The Galway Music Residency is also bringing Finnish accordionist Timo Kinnunen to Galway in May to take part in a number of workshops and perform with ConTempo; in September ConTempo will tour with Irish guitarist Alec O’Leary; Euphonium player Gary Curtin will give group and one to one workshops with local bands in November before performing with them in a concert in the city centre.
