Six county titles up for grabs

Six badminton titles will be decided on Saturday when the County Badminton Leagues finals take place at the Galway Lawn Tennis Club.

The host club is favoured to win this year’s division two decider, but they will not have it easy against NUIG in this year’s showpiece.

The County Badminton Leagues Finals will be played next Saturday at 5pm in GLTC with interesting battles in all divisions. The teams have met already this season with GLTC edging past their opponents 4-3 on that occasion.

In division three Oranmore have justified their favourites tag by topping the league table, but they were closely followed by Claregalway. Oranmore A have already beaten Claregalway twice this year, but the last winning scoreline of 4-3 suggests this match could go right down to the final mixed pairings.

Cortoon, having won All-Ireland titles at lower divisions, are favourites in division four where they face Loughrea, while GLTC and Loughrea will battle it out in division five. The teams have met twice this season with GLTC edging past Loughrea 4-3 on the last occasion.

In division six Furbo topped the table in the West division, and were followed into the play-offs by GLTC, and both sides advanced to the final having seen off Furbo and Claregalway respectively.

Division seven, introduced last year to cater for an increase in new players, sees Ardrahan and Letterfrack face each other in the decider, having overcome Killannin and Clonberne respectively in their semi-finals.
