The Special Olympics All Ireland Collection Day takes place on April 15 and as many people as possible are needed to volunteer to be collectors on the day.
Special Olympics regional fundraising coordinator, Lydia Rogers, said it will be a simple on-street collection.
“All volunteers need to do is throw on a high visibility vest, grab a bucket and shake it! Any collectors who have previously helped out on Collection Day have had lots of fun,” she said. “One or two hours given by volunteers will really make a difference to our athletes.”
The 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games take place in Athens, Greece in June and 126 athletes from across the country will represent Ireland on the international sporting sage. Nine athletes from County Galway will be members of Team Ireland.
Money raised during Collection Day will go towards ensuring Team Ireland athletes are prepared to the best of their ability, and ensure the programme of sport and competition is developed for the additional 11,000 athletes in the Special Olympics programme.
Volunteers can sign up by texting COLLECT followed by their name and county to 51444, by registering online through www.specialolympics.ie/collectionday, or by emailing [email protected]
