Teenager further remanded on bail for city centre pub knife assault on St Patrick’s Day

A Ballybane teenager, who allegedly assaulted a co-owner of a city centre pub while armed with a knife during St Patrick’s Day celebrations, was remanded on continuing bail with strict conditions.

John Mongan (18 ) with an address at 5 Castlepark, Ballybane, appeared before Galway District Court charged with assaulting Ciaran Hanley causing him harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and being in possession of a knife, contrary to Section 9(1 ) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990, at Murty Rabbitts Bar, Forster Street, on March 18, 2011.

The court was told that Mongan was arrested at his home address just after 4pm on March 18 and taken to Galway Garda Station where he was charged.

Inspector Brendan Carroll said that the DPP directions are not ready and that the State would be looking for strict bail conditions.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded Mongan on continuing bail to appear again at Galway District Court on June 13 and ordered him to abide by a curfew of between 11pm and 8am, to sign on daily at Galway Garda Station, surrender his passport, and refrain from entering Murty Rabbitts pending completion of the matter. Free legal aid was also granted.
