Seanad Éireann candidate Niall Ó Brolcháin is calling on Galwegians to support the upcoming May Day Walk on the prom in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs.
The walk will take place on Sunday May 1, starting at the Claddagh Hall at 12 noon. It is organised by the Galway branch of the association. The walk is 8km long and there will be a presentation of medals at the end of the walk for all participants.
“As a former patron of Irish Guide Dogs, I never anticipated that one day I would be availing of their vital services in order to help my six-year-old son,” said Mr Ó Brolcháin.
The Irish Guide Dogs provide an Assistance Dog Programme for children with autism and Mr Ó Brolcháin and his family have “been fortunate to receive direct help from the programme”.
“An assistance dog is the same breed, age and temperament as a guide dog and is trained especially to work with an autistic child and his or her family.” he said.
Assistance dogs can provide greater aptitude towards learning, improved participation in social activities, improved communication skills, a greater sense of responsibility and improved confidence and independence for children with autism.
