City Hall wants your old cycling photos

The public are being asked to submit any photographs they have to do with cycling to help form an exhibition which will take place in the summer.

Galway city will host the National Opening Event for Bike Week in Eyre Square on Saturday June 18, marking the beginning of a week long programme of cycling events for all age groups.

As part of its preparations the Galway City Council’s Galway Transportation Unit is seeking the help and support of the public in sourcing old photographs which depict the significant role of cycling in Galway during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The photos will be used in a photographic exhibition which GTU aims to have on public display during Galway Bike Festival from June 18 to 26.

The GTU is particularly interested in photos which clearly depict people cycling in different areas of Galway city, eg, along Shop Street, near St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, or in Salthill in the 19th/20th centuries.

“We would love to source a variety of photos illustrating the significance of cycling in a range of different contexts such as travelling to a dance, work and school, etc, or just enjoying the city by bicycle,” said a GTU spokesperson.

Members of the public who wishes to submit a photograph for the exhibition should forward it, along with a few lines highlighting the year and location of the picture and any interesting comments on the photograph, to the Galway Transportation Unit, Galway City Council, City Hall, College Road, Galway, not later than Wednesday March 31.

All photos will be handled with care and returned to the owner. Further details on this exhibition can be obtained from the GTU on 091 - 894328
