Hospital art exhibition features work of local brother and sister

An exhibition titled Oil and Water featuring new paintings by brother and sister James F and Mary Horan opened at University Hospital Galway recently.

Consultant rheumatologist Dr Robert Coughlan opened the exhibition which is on display on the art corridor at the hospital until April 8.

Born in Galway the Horans have both exhibited extensively and their artwork features in many collections throughout the world.

James studied architecture at the Dublin Institute of Technology and has practiced as an architect since 1974. He is currently the Professor of Architecture at The Dublin School of Architecture, DIT and adjunct professor at the North Carolina State University. He is director of the Architectural Practice, Design Strategies, in Dublin. Throughout his architectural career, he has been producing drawings and paintings of architecture and other subjects. His current work consists mainly of watercolours and pen and ink drawings. His drawings and paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy Dublin and the Royal Academy London.

Artworks by James Horan can be found on display or in the collection of the OPW, Courts of Criminal Justice, Dáil Eireann, Dublin Castle, Aer Rianta, Dermot Desmond, Michael Smurfit, Van Morrison, Dublin Institute of Technology. His works can be viewed at www.jameshoran.ie

Mary Horan has recently opened her own art gallery in Moycullen. A fulltime artist, her work is influenced by the sea, having been born and reared in Salthill. Mary paints primarily in oils, has also explored and developed an exciting range of paintings around the themes of people, buildings and the abstract.

She has exhibited in many galleries throughout the country with great success including Gallery Zozimus, Francis Street, Dublin, Russell Gallery, New Quay, Co Clare, and the Kenny Gallery, Lahinch, Co Clare. Her work can be found in many private collections around the world including America, Japan, Belgium, France and Australia and has been exhibited at the Volvo Ocean Race, the Wexford Opera Festival and the RDS Art Fair.
