MAIRTÍN O’CONNOR is one of the greats of the accordion and of Irish trad and he is about to launch a new book of transcriptions of his music.

Inside The Box, Outside The Box will be officially launched in the College Bar of NUI, Galway on Tuesday at 6pm. Arts Council director Mary Cloake will be the guest speaker.

“Over the years, musicians of various instruments have asked me for transcriptions of some of my tunes,” says Mairtín. “I decided to put this book together when more and more people started coming up to me after concerts asking where they could find the sheet music.

“The book consists of tunes I have already recorded as well as some tunes not previously recorded. They range from ‘easy-to-play’ tunes to some which are more technically demanding.”

Mairtín O’Connor and his band will also headline the Arts in Action Traditional Concert, also on Tuesday, but at 7.30pm in the Bailey Allen Hall, NUIG. Mairtín’s band will feature Jimmy Higgins (percussion ), Steve Hanks (saxophone ), Seamie O’Dowd (guitar ), Cathal Hayden (fiddle/banjo ), and Gary O’Briain (mando cello/piano ).

Tickets to the concert are €10/5 and available from the Societies Box at Áras na Mac Leinn, NUI, Galway or by calling 091 - 492852/091 - 492088.
