Hurling supporters gear up for new season

Ollie Canning will be an ambassador this year for the Galway Hurling Supporters Club which holds its annual general meeting next Wednesday (March 23 ).

The club, set up three years ago, now boasts more than 1,000 members, and Canning’s new role will be to establish links with former Galway players.

Included in the list of events this season is the annual gala golf outing which takes place in the Galway Golf Club on July 1, while in May the Galway hurlers will once again hold an open day in Athenry where Galway players will meet and “play” with members of the public.

According to club chairman Eamon Bradshaw, one of the club's aims is to encourage support from people who have left the province or emigrated, and in conjunction with the Galway Hurling Board, the supporters hope to appoint a representative from each club to help create a stronger link with those who have emigrated.

Bradshaw says the club’s role also is to provide additional funding to help Galway win the McCarthy Cup,.

"We firmly believe the current team and mentors are well capable of winning the All Ireland, and that the long wait is almost over."

The club's AGM will be held in Paddy Burke’s in Clarenbridge at 8.30pm., and Bradshaw says all hurling supporters are urged to attend.

Membership is €30 for a family, €20 for an individual, €5 for a student, and all under 18 years are free. There are special benefits for members, including discounts in selected shops, and this year the club will raffle a number of All Ireland final tickets among the members.

Business membership is also available for €200 , which includes an advertisement on the club's website www.ghsc.ie, which Bradshaw says was accessed last year by almost 100,000 followers. A special reception for all business members will be held at Pearse Stadium, prior to the match against Tipperary on Sunday April 3.

Membership application form are available on the website www.ghsc.ie , in the programme for the upcoming Kilkenny and Tipperary matches, at Pearse Stadium, or from any of the committee members.
