Increased demand for qualified childcare professionals

There has been a noticeable increase in the demand for qualified childcare professionals in Ireland and graduates now have a wider range of career options to choose from in the childcare sector including crèche, day nursery, playgroup, and Montessori; special needs assistant in classroom or day care centre; childcare professional or nanny at home or abroad; after-school care; and starting your own childcare business/home-based child-minder.

Atlantic College Galway has already established its reputation in training high-quality childcare graduates. Graduates are qualified to work with children up to age six years in nurseries, crèches, fun factories, as a nanny in a private homes in Ireland or abroad, or to open their own childcare service. Graduates are also qualified to work with deprived, disabled, and disturbed children in sheltered or residential care up to the age of seven years.

Atlantic offers a range of very good part-time courses including the FETAC Level 5 certificate in childcare for those who are starting a career in childcare, and the FETAC Level 6 advanced certificate in the supervision of childcare for those in or moving to supervisory/management roles. The Level 5 course runs on Saturdays. The next course begins on Saturday March 26 and is enrolling now. The Level 6 course begins Saturday May 7 and will be delivered online with one-to-one tutor support. This course is very user friendly and students can study anywhere, any time; enrolments are being taken now. Atlantic is also delivering the Level 6 course locally for childcare services in Portumna and Mountbellew.

Part of Atlantic College’s focus is to make education and training more accessible for those who need to train or retrain. Atlantic realises that cost is one of the major barriers preventing many people from participating. In order to increase access and to open up avenues to those who wish to partake, the college offers a range of discounts and supports. The range of discounts includes a 10 per cent discount on the course fee for applicants in receipt of a social welfare. Additional supports built into courses include help with writing CVs and job applications, and providing information and guidance with regard to job opportunities.

Those wishing to begin or advance their career in the childcare sector are invited to visit the college (located a two-minute walk from Eyre Square opposite the private coach station on Fairgreen Road ) or make contact by calling FreeCall 1800 938 868 or email [email protected]
