WEST SIDE Story, one of the great American musicals, will be staged in The Black Box theatre by Encore Theatre Company from November 7 to 14 with a matinee and evening performance on Sunday 9.
Set in Manhattan’s West Side/Hell's Kitchen in the mid-1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and what happens when Tony of the White gang falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang.
This production of West Side Story is something of a ‘family affair’ on and off-stage. Alan Greaney will take the role of Tony and Maria will be played by Belfast’s Amy Harper. Alan himself has recently become engaged and his fiancée, Caroline Wright, will be one of the dancers in the Encore Theatre Company production.
Alan’s future father-in-law Len will be building the elaborate set for this production. His wife, artist Val Wright, has also been involved as a scenic artist.
The cast includes Sean Hosty, Katie Creaven, Eddie Sheahan, Sinead Heneghan, Michelle Lawless, Shane O’Grady, and Peter Kennedy.
Peter Kennedy will also direct and choreograph this production. The musical director is John Roe. The chorus mistress is Mairead Crushell.
