GMIT Students' Union RAG Week raises more than €10,000 for charity

GMIT Students' Union RAG Week which ran without incident last month raised a total of approximately €10,000 for Serve, Aware, Special Olympics West, and the Irish Heart Foundation with more funds yet to come.

The money was raised through a series of events such as:

• Moxegen (which embraced the spirit of the summer festival, mud included )!

• The Rubberbandits made an appearance in the Library Bar

• A Dunk Tank on campus gave everyone the opportunity to soak the Sabbaticals

• The ever-popular Bungee Jump saw a fantastic turnout despite the rain

• The IT Factor Song Contest saw its most successful year ever. Hector ó hEochagáin was MC on the night with judges TG4’s Gemma Ní Chionnaith, Operation Transformation’s Ronan Scully and GMIT’s Joe O’Connor. Congratulations to the winners on the night Myles Kelly who won the best cover song and Dáithí Jordan who won the best original song.

The Students' Union liaised with residents and Garda in the build-up to the week, as well as distributing leaflets on the Sshh Campaign (Silent Students Happy Homes ), other student behaviour information and sensible drinking on campus as well as in the student villages. The Union had also continued with its effective Student Patrol Scheme throughout the week.

Colin Canny, GMIT Students' Union president commented, "We are delighted with the success of the week and thanks to everybody who contributed. A huge amount of work and effort went into to ensuring that all activities were effective, peaceful and carried out in a controlled environment. We are awaiting other monies raised from fundraising to come through, but it is looking likely that we will beat our previous highest total. To date we have approximately €10,000 and we expect the final figure to be close to €15,000 which is a testament to the work everybody put in."

Clarification

— In an Advertiser article on the student disorder which emanated from NUI, Galway College Week last week, due to a typographical error in one instance it was stated that the event was GMIT College Week. This was not the case. GMIT college week ran successfully and without incident last month. The Advertiser is happy to clarify this.
