If you fancy getting up close to Galway's top sport stars on Saturday, you may have to lose your hair for the priviledge.
Connacht Rugby captain and international John Muldoon, Galway senior hurling captain Damien Joyce, and Galway senior hurler Joe Canning are becoming hairdressers to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society.
The ‘Shave or Dye’ event takes place on Saturday (February 26 ) in Supermac’s, Eyre Square at 1pm. Run in association with Today FM, and supervised by Fat Tony’s Barbers, the event is open to all members of the public to have their heads shaved. Some 27 Supermac’s staff members from head office and restaurants around Galway city and county have already signed up to losing their locks.
Supermac’s employee and ‘Shave or Dye’ event organiser Fiona Slevin says: “ We’re hoping some members of the public will take part on the day, having their heads shaved by the sports stars who are kindly giving their time to the event. All donations are welcome with funds raised going directly to the Irish Cancer Society.”
The latest data from the National Cancer Registry of Ireland reveals 29,775 new cases of cancer diagnosed in 2009, with that figure reaching more than 40,000 by the year 2020.
Today FM launched ‘Shave or Dye’ – its first station charity drive in aid of the Irish Cancer Society which saw the station's presenters shaving and dyeing their hair and in turn asking listeners to do the same, raising more than €800,000 for the cancer socity. The station now is hoping to reach and possibly exceed that target in 2011 with events taking place around the country.
