Parents and young people are heartbroken due to forced emigration, according to Fine Gael Galway West candidate Senator Fidelma Healy Eames who said that her party has the plan to help get Galway’s 23,000 unemployed back to work.
“The most up to date figures from the Central Statistics Office show that unemployment levels have soared by almost 140 per cent in Galway since the last general election in June 2007. Twenty-three thousand people signed on in Galway last month. Fine Gael is the only party with a credible plan to address this appalling situation.
“Our strategy will tackle huge unemployment rates like those in Galway. Unlike other parties we will not increase direct taxes on jobs. We will go further than this, by halving employers’ PRSI for the lowest paid, to help protect jobs.
“Like every town across the country, Galway has been blighted by emigration, as young people have been left with no option by the Fianna Fail-led Government but to go abroad in search of work. Fine Gael has a comprehensive plan to stem the tide of young talent leaving our shores. We will create more than 45,000 placements in a range of training and education opportunities.
Senator Healy Eames concluded: “I have watched with anger and dismay as dole queues have exploded in Galway, thanks to Fianna Fail’s broken economic legacy. As part of the Fine Gael 5 Point Plan, our key priority is to tackle unemployment and get Ireland working
