Greenfields Hockey Club easily accounted for Yeats County by 5-0 to win the Connacht Senior League and the Comer Cup for the third year in a row. The Galway champions will now represent the province in the Irish Hockey League wildcard play-offs in Dublin in May when they will compete against opposition from Leinster, Munster, and Ulster.
Greenfields controlled the weekend's final game from the start, with the midfield duo of Neasa McGettigan and Dora Gorman getting the better of the lively Rachael Bourne and Sarah McDaid. After creating several chances, Mary Healy finished a well-taken short corner to open the scoring.
Greenfields continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded with a second goal in the 20th minute when Mary Healy laid a wonderful pass from the backline to Alma Whelan on the penalty spot and her shot to the corner gave the Yeats keeper no chance.
Greenfields could have scored again but for the great defensive work of Yeat’s captain Deirdre Heaslip who felled a number of attacking chances. However Greenfields got on the scoresheet again just before halftime when Grace McCormack scored from close range following a great movement from midfield. Ciara McCormack was unlucky not to get one back for Yeats early in the second half, but Sinead Collins was alert in the Greenfields' goal. Instead it was Healy who added to the Greenfields' tally after a great phase of play. Anne Madden found Siobhan Divilly down the left before Whelan, on the edge of the circle, found the in-rushing Mary Healy who scored.
Greenfields were not finished, producing their fifth which started from a Catherine Moore intercept. Four more players were involved before Alma Whelan concluded the game and this season's league in style.
