Fibromyalgia support group to meet in city next month

A support group for people suffering from fibromyalgia will hold its first meeting on Tuesday March 1 from 7.30 to 9pm at Galway Cheshire House, Curragrean, Merlin Park.

Future meetings will take place on the first Tuesday of each month at the same time.

Fibromyalgia is a common condition in which people experience long term, body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues.

It has been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression, anxiety, and other symptoms.

Possible causes or triggers of fibromyalgia include:

• Physical or emotional trauma

• An abnormal pain response. Areas in the brain that are responsible for pain may react differently in fibromyalgia patients.

• Sleep disturbances, which are common in fibromyalgia patients.

• An infectious microbe, such as a virus. At this point, no such virus or microbe has been identified.

People of all ages can get fibromyalgia however it is most common in women aged 20 to 50 years.
