A smörgåsbord of delights from the Danish String Quartet

IT WAS the Scandinavians who gave us the concept of the smörgåsbord, a meal where guests can help themselves from a range of dishes.

However if The New York Times is to be believed, the Danish String Quartet have taken this culinary concept into musical realms, with that paper describing their concerts as being like “a smorgasbord of strings served with youthful vigour and sense jolting spices”.

The Danish String Quartet will be serving their “smorgasbord of strings” up to Galway audiences in the Aula Maxima, NUI, Galway on Thursday February 24 at 8pm.

Their programme will feature Shostakovich’s Quartet No 2, a strong and forceful piece written in 1944; a quartet by Denmark’s most celebrated composer Carl Nielsen; and Arcadiana, a work by contemporary composer Thomas Adès, described as an “evocation of paradise in seven short movements”.

The quartet have won numerous awards including the Danish Radio P2 Chamber Music Competition in 2004 and first prize at the 2009 London International String Quartet Competition.

Tickets are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ), Opus II the Cornstore, or www.tht.ie
