Galway farmers could soon be benefiting from cheaper animal feed, after Ireland voted in favour of new measures at EU level, according to Galway East TD Michael Kitt.
Fianna Fáil is supporting proposals which will allow food, food ingredients and feed containing genetically modified maize and cotton to be placed on the market.
If approved, Dep Kitt, who is running for the party in Galway East in the upcoming General Election, said Ireland’s position will help reduce the cost of animal feed facing Galway farmers.
“Ireland is the most dependent country in the EU on imported animal feed and rising prices have been significantly increasing the costs facing Irish farmers,” he said. “Using GM feed has the potential to considerably reduce costs.”
Dep Kitt said that supporting these measures at EU level should help address the problem of high costs.
