Why no money for city ‘death trap’ road ask Maunsells Road residents

Maunsells Road residents are “angry and frustrated” that of the €75 million in funds announced for roads in County Galway, nothing has been allocated for a dangerous junction in Taylor’s Hill.

Last week the National Roads Authority announced major funds for roads in County Galway. Of this, more than €4 million was allocated to the Galway City Council.

Residents have been campaigning for a footpath on a dangerous stretch of Maunsells Road where there is no footpath along a 50m stretch of roadway at the junction with Taylor’s Hill.

“The road is too narrow for pedestrians to pass safely when cars are driving in both directions,” said a spokesperson for the residents. “This dangerous death-trap needs to be fixed before someone gets killed.”

According to residents, City Hall said funding for this project is currently not available, despite “acknowledging the genuine issues raised by residents”.

Residents said this can no longer be the case following the allocation from the NRA and the recent confirmation from the council that it had also secured extra funding for road repairs caused by the extreme weather conditions in the pre-Christmas period.

“Funding is obviously available,” said the residents’ spokesperson. “The council is currently installing a footpath in Devon Park and residents near Rockbarton say the council tried to install a footpath there. It suggests to us that funding is available and choices are being made on what projects should be pursued. This all raises the question – why is the Maunsells Road danger being ignored?”
