Canney lambasts no-show fellow councillors

County Council - Chamber Watch

The absence of 22 councillors from Monday’s Galway County Council meeting left County Mayor Jimmy McClearn with no option but to abandon the proceedings.

Independent councillor and Galway East candidate Seán Canney, one of only eight councillors to attend the meeting, has castigated his fellow councillors for their “total lack of respect in allowing the meeting to be abandoned”.

“The meeting was discussing the issue of the state of the regional and local roads when the meeting was abandoned,” said Cllr Canney, “and we were unable to get a response from the county manager on employing additional outdoor staff.”

Cllr Canney said councillors “are elected to represent the people at council level and it should not be tolerated that so few councillors are in attendance. This type of behaviour is unacceptable and further undermines the reputation of politicians and politics.”
