Tuesday is February 1, the feast day of St Brigid, and the Galway City Museum will be marking the day with a series of events.
On Tuesday at 11.30am in the museum, Brendan McGowan will give a talk and demonstration on some of the traditions associated with St Brigid. During this event members of the public can have a go at making some of the various styles of St Brigid's crosses.
The crosses were said to protect homes, and outhouses, from fire and evil. According to legend, St Brigid made the very first cross at the bedside of a dying pagan chieftain. As was the custom, the dirt floor was covered in rushes for warmth and cleanliness.
To pass the time Brigid began fashioning a cross from the rushes. The chieftain asked what she was doing, which led to a conversation about Jesus, and the chieftain’s conversion to Christianity before his death.
