Newcastle man charged with city burglaries

A 25-year-old man has been charged with alleged burglaries in the city last summer.

Gerard Rabbitt, with an address at 96 Inishannagh Park, Newcastle, was brought in custody before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday.

The court heard that on the morning of the court sitting, at 9.24am, Rabbitt had been “arrested for the purpose of charge” in the Inishannagh Park area and conveyed to Galway Garda Station. He was charged with burglary at 24 Leitir Burca, Ballymoneen Road, Knocknacarra, on August 18, 2010, as well as burglary and unauthorised carriage in an mpv at 52 Tudor Lawn, Newcastle, on the same date.

Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that it will be alleged the burglaries took place in houses that had been occupied at the time but that there was no violence involved.

It was stated Rabbitt had been held in custody in relation to these matters but that the State had no objection to bail being granted.

Judge Fahy accepted jurisdiction and remanded Rabbitt on his own bail of €300 to appear at Galway District Court again for mention on March 23 next.
