New year, new name for Oscars

Another year to look forward to; I wonder if 2011 will be as eventful as 2010 at Oscars? In fact 2010 was a pretty good year in Galway despite the best efforts of the economic environment. The year got off to a great start for Oscars with our inclusion into the Bridgestone Guide’s Top 100 Restaurants in Ireland. It really is a great privilege to make it into the guide as the top 100 also includes restaurants in the north of the country.

Also during 2010 we finally went for it and placed a real focus on to the wonderful seafood available throughout the year in Galway. So Oscars has a small change of name, to Oscars Seafood Bistro. However, we still take our land-based foods very seriously and many thanks to the local artisan producers of the county which include, among others, Colleran’s Butchers, Beechlawn Organic Farm, Killeen Farmhouse Cheese, and the fishmongers par excellence Gannet fishmongers to name just a few of the food heroes of Galway.

But 2011 seems to be shaping up to be a year of increased taxation and expense. But why should a well-deserved night out become an unaffordable luxury? At Oscars we are now offering a superb set value menu consisting of a starter and main course at €19.50 from Monday through to Thursday all night long which will be taking full advantage of our region’s best foods.

Also don’t forget to check out the Oscars Seafood Bistro website www.oscarsbistro.ie and in particular the online cook book where you will be able to find the recipes and articles featured in this column throughout the year.

Finally, all of us at Oscars wish you a very happy New Year and looking forward to seeing you for 2011.
