Public meeting on seeking reform of Irish politics

A public meeting, which will seek to start a movement that will place genuine political reform at the forefront of national debate, will take place in Galway next week.

The meeting is being hosted by Second Republic and it will take place on Wednesday January 19 at 7pm in Flannery’s Hotel.

Second Republic is a non-aligned movement that is campaigning for wide-ranging political and constitutional reforms that will be decided through a national convention, similar to Iceland’s Citizen’s Assembly, which seeks to reform Icelandic politics following that nation’s own financial crisis.

“Second Republic is about setting an agenda, not pushing a particular vision of Ireland,” said a spokesperson for the group. “We want to place genuine political reform at the forefront of a national debate and see the people of Ireland decide the shape a reborn Ireland should take.”

The spokesperson said the National Convention would be a state facilitated constitutional convention that will be independent of the Oireachtas; involve substantial participation from citizens; be open in its remit; and be binding in so far as its recommendations will be put to a referendum. That referendum will may contain multiple questions arising from the different options arrived at the convention.

It will take submissions from the public on what reforms there need to be and what the people of Ireland want from the State.
