There was an increase of eight per cent in new buildings in Galway city and county in 2010, according to figures released by GeoDirectory.
GeoDirectory, a subsidiary of An Post working with Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi ), manages the country’s only complete database of residential and commercial buildings. The figures were compiled nationwide by 5,600 An Post delivery staff working with experts from OSi.
It was revealed that in Galway 1,603 new residential and commercial buildings were identified last year. This represents a year-on-year increase of eight per cent compared to 2009 when 1,491 new buildings were recorded in the county. The increase in new additions in Galway is in contrast to the 23 per cent drop recorded nationwide. Several other counties - Donegal, Leitrim, Longford, Meath, Sligo, and Wexford - also bucked the national trend showing small increases in new building additions compared to 2009.
Of the new 1,603 buildings recorded in Galway city and county 1,472 were residential buildings, 99 were commercial buildings, and 32 were dual-purpose buildings with both residential and commercial space. These new additions bring the total number of buildings in Galway city and county to 108,396.
Across the country, GeoDirectory recorded 17,587 new buildings, composed of 14,495 residential buildings, 2,137 commercial buildings, and 955 dual-purpose buildings with both residential and commercial components. The new additions in 2010 bring the total number of buildings in the Republic of Ireland to 1,878,824.
The largest decrease in new building additions was seen in Dublin city and county were 982 new buildings where identified representing a 61 per cent drop compared to 2009.
