Speculation and uncertainty surrounds FF Galway East convention

Fianna Fáil has chosen its candidates for Galway West but uncertainty still surrounds what the party is doing about Galway East.

The Fianna Fáil Galway East election selection convention was to be held in the Temperance Hall, Loughrea, on January 27 or 28, however party sources indicated this week that the date is likely to be changed and could even be brought forward by a week.

So far councillors Mary Hoade and Gerry Finnerty have been nominated to stand and it is expected that Dep Michael Kitt will also allow his name to go forward. Dep Noel Treacy is also considering running again, but has made no firm decision as yet.

There is also speculation that councillors Tomás Mannion and Michael Connolly, and perhaps even former Galway East TD Joe Callanan could be standing at the convention.

FF members in Galway East are also awaiting a decision from HQ on how many candidates will run. The party may only opt to run two, or as is more likely, two will be selected at convention with HQ adding a third later on.
