Grealish calls for election to ‘secure economic growth’

It is “well past time” for the Taoiseach to “name the day” for the forthcoming general election as only an election will give the State and its people “peace of mind” politically and economically.

This is the view of Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish who is demanding that the date of the election be announced.

Brian Cowen’s Government has no mandate and the public has no confidence in it. Despite this, Cowen refuses to name the date of the election in order to cling onto power as long as possible. For Dep Grealish, this situation is “helping nobody and is having an adverse effect on many businesses, both nationally and on the international market”.

Dep Grealish said people are afraid to invest or make strategic decisions for the future of their businesses until they have more clarity about the political situation that is going to prevail in the country for the next five years.

“Long term future planning needs to be done now, especially in relation to job creation and economic growth for the future and this cannot be done until the election is called and a new government formed” he said. “The people need peace of mind politically, as well as economically, and this will not come about until the election is held.”
