Grealish accuses Bank of Ireland of insensitivity over new charges

The Bank of Ireland’s decision to introduce a hike in charges to its current account holders from the end of February is an “insensitive and insulting proposal”.

This is the view of Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish who said he was “shocked and appalled” by the new charges.

According to Dep Grealish, the nature and structure of the proposed new charges are “set up in such a way as to impact most adversely on the less well off in their customer base”.

“The Irish economy has been virtually brought to its knees by the banking sector over the past two years and, instead of apologising to the people of this country, they are still behaving in a more arrogant and insensitive manner than ever before,” he said.

Dep Grealish has called on Bank of Ireland to “reverse this ludicrous decision” and he has written to the Minister for Finance expressing his outrage at this decision.

“As the Irish Government is a major shareholder in Bank of Ireland,” he said, “I will be asking the Minister use his influence on the Board and have this decision reversed.”
