HOW WAS 2010 for you? Filmwise? What were the films that excelled, the films that were just a waste of time, and those which failed to live up to all the trailer hype?
To be fair I actually struggled to find flops while looking back on some of 2010’s big movies, in general it was a very good year. In January cinema lovers were treated to a great performance by Robert Downey Jnr in the smash hit Sherlock Holmes.
The film, directed by Guy Richie, is an exciting and innovative take on the much loved character of Holmes who is a fast thinking, bare-knuckle punching, slightly mad detective that is just brilliant. Downey Jnr had a very good year with a second film which was a surprising hit. Marvel fan or not, Iron Man 2 packed a punch.
Another brilliant movie was Invictus. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this film gives us a glimpse into how a newly elected Nelson Mandela utilised and pushed for a victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup in order to help heal old wounds in post-apartheid South Africa.
By October everyone was talking about The Social Network which was a fast-paced and exceptionally entertaining look at the early days of Facebook. Some surprising hits this year were the romantic rom-com It’s Complicated, the hilarious Kick-Ass, action-packed The A-Team, the great British comedy Burke and Hare, and the animated brilliance of Megamind.
There was also alot expected from the big franchise movie sequals such as Sex and the City 2, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Toy Story 3, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. All four movies lived up to the expections in different ways.
It was difficult to pick out the flops of the year but since I have to choose then I would start with Daybreakers. I was left very disapointed by this dystopian world where vampires have taken over and the remaining humans are hunted down and farmed. The film just got lost in the gore too much. Clash of the Titans just simply annoyed me with the haphazard storyline, the cringy scenes, and the useless 3D.
There was a few films which were over-rated with lots of publicity in the run of the release but then failed to truely impress. Crazy Heart might have done well in the awards department but I just found it so boring that I was begging for the film to get to the point and to the end. Other 2010 films which just didn’t hit the mark for me was Due Date, The Tourist, and Shutter Island.
