OUT OF A Box is the title of this year’s 126 gallery Annual Members Show which opens on this evening at 7pm and features work by 11 artists.
The members were asked to respond to the theme ‘Out of a Box’, a term believed to derive from a puzzle created by early 20th century British mathematician Henry Ernest Dudeney.
In this puzzle, a person is asked to interconnect nine dots in a three-by-three grid by using four straight lines drawn without the pencil leaving the paper.
In order to be successful, the puzzle solver has to realise that the boundaries of the dot array are psychological. The only way to solve the puzzle is to extend the lines beyond the artificial boundary created by the nine dots.
The exhibiting artists are Fionn Kidney, Niamh Ó Beirne, Austin Ivers, Timothy Emlyn Jones, Sarah Lundy, Jim Ricks, Micheál Conlon, Eileen Hutton, Christopher Banahan, Lorraine Neeson, and Nina Amazing.
The works on show feature painting, video, sculpture, installation, and photography and range from the academic to the critical, to the playful, and the humorous.
Out Of A Box runs until January 29 at 126 on Queen Street. See also www.126.ie
