January events @ GAC

THE GALWAY Arts Centre will host two very different events in January - an exhibition from Majella Dowdican and a multi-media performance entitled DAS SPLINTER.

The first solo exhibition of the GAC’s current artist in residence, Majella Dowdican, opens at 5.30pm Tuesday January 11.

Dowdican’s work looks at the ‘prefabricated’ as it occurs in social situations and in the materials she uses. She creates works in a way that makes the artist’s presence and the process of production obvious.

Paper cut-outs, wall paintings, and stitched canvases make it apparent to the viewer that they have entered a fabricated space, leaving them under no illusion that what they are looking at has been carefully orchestrated. The exhibition runs until January 21.

On January 22 at 7pm, the centre will host DAS SPLINTER. This free evening event will include; live performances, film screenings, texts, posters, and limited edition vinyl recordings. The event is curated by Russell Hart.

Participating artists are Erik Skagerfält (Sweden ); Jennie Guy, Karl Burke, Stephen Brandes, and ETP (Ireland ); Carsten Nicolai and Olaf Nicolai (Germany ); Lieven Martins/Dolphins Into The Future (Belgium ); and Mordant Music and the BFI (Britain ).

Admission to both events is free. For more information please contact [email protected]
